History

institutePhilosophy has been studied at Leuven since the foundation of the university in 1425. In 1889 the Institute of Philosophy attained an independent status due to the efforts of Cardinal Désiré Mercier.

Mission Statement

libraryThe Institute of Philosophy was founded to promote advanced philosophical learning and research. Within the university its primary aim is to contribute to defining an intellectual context for dialogue between the various sciences and the liberal arts. It also wishes to contribute to an understanding of the proper role of the university within the wider community.
