Pierre-Etienne Vandamme earned his doctorate in philosophy at UCLouvain in 2017, with a dissertation on the relation between democracy and social justice. He worked one year as a pedagogical advisor and developed a website in French dedicated to the teaching of ethics in higher education. He then spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven (2018-2019), three years as an FNRS Research Fellow at Université libre de Bruxelles, in the political science department (2019-2022), and is back to Leuven for the period 2022-2025 thanks to an FWO Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship.

He works in the fields of political philosophy and political theory, with a particular interest in democratic theory, representation, democratic innovations, theories of justice, and civic education. He is currently writing a book on Hybrid Democracy, a democratic model mixing different types of representation (through elections and sortition) and mechanisms of direct democracy. In parallel, he also conducts research on the demands of egalitarian justice and the philosophy of G. A. Cohen.

Within RIPPLE, he participates in the activities of the Critical Theory and Democracy group as well as the Justice group. At KU Leuven, he teaches Philosophy of Law and Political Philosophy. Besides, he is an invited lecturer at UCLouvain, an associate member of the Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics and the initiator of the Réseau de théorie politique normative.
