Workshop: Linguistic justice and Migration

DESCRIPTION

With the steady increase of migration, theories of linguistic justice face new challenges. English is becoming the lingua franca across the globe, as well as within a state, posing a concern for speakers of local languages. The language rights and duties of immigrants is becoming a pressing concern, competing with the language rights and duties of dominant majority and national minorities. Reflecting the rising concern, few works address issues that relate to linguistic justice and immigration. To expand the scope of the literature, this workshop examines theories of linguistic justice that provide answers to challenges raised by migration. We have invited authors who provide novel and original insights on the intersection of linguistic justice and immigration.

This workshop is the first workshop of the Linguistic Justice Society. The aim of this society is to promote the coordination of all the research carried out by scholars working on language, politics and ethics, and to disseminate this research in the academic and the public arena. The event is open to any researchers who are interested in the issue of language and everyone is welcome to join. It would be a wonderful opportunity to enlarge the scope of the Linguistic Justice Society, where we can meet new researchers and plan together future events, collaborations and publications. It is funded by the migration and justice project at KU Leuven’s research group
